The first war-canoe race in more than 100 years took place place Saturday in Victoria's Inner Harbour.
Five First nations from across Vancouver Island kicked off the event with traditional dances and ceremonial blessings.
Bleachers were set up to accommodate spectators for the race which stretched from Laurel Point to the finish line at Ship Point.
The war canoes were a fixture of Victoria's Inner Harbour a century ago and the First Nations who participated said they felt it was important to bring back this unique part of Vancouver Island history.
Why honour [the occupation] by another nation-in this case by China? Rather lets celebrate our indigenous, first people....and! yes!........
